Companion-animal departure from Korea is governed by the export-quarantine article of the Contagious Animal Disease Prevention Act (가축전염병예방법). Article 41 (수출 검역 등, Export Quarantine etc.) sets out the rules.
Article 41 — Export quarantine
- (1) A person who intends to export designated quarantine objects (지정검역물) must undergo quarantine inspection by a quarantine officer — "지정검역물을 수출하려는 자는 농림축산식품부령으로 정하는 바에 따라 검역관의 검역을 받아야 한다" — except where the importing country does not require quarantine for the designated quarantine object. (Amended 2013-03-23.)
- (2) A person who wishes to receive export quarantine for animals and their products other than designated quarantine objects may apply for and undergo quarantine inspection by a quarantine officer — "지정검역물 외의 동물 및 그 생산물 등의 수출 검역을 받으려는 자는 신청을 하여 검역관의 검역을 받을 수 있다."
- (3) Export quarantine under paragraphs (1) and (2) follows the standards and methods required by the government authority of the counterpart country; where the counterpart government requires none, it may follow the standards and methods required by the importer — "제1항 및 제2항의 수출 검역은 상대국의 정부기관이 요구하는 기준과 방법 등에 따른다. 다만, 상대국의 정부기관이 요구하는 기준과 방법 등이 없는 경우에는 수입자가 요구하는 기준과 방법 등에 따를 수 있다." - (4) The head of an animal-quarantine agency may, where necessary for export quarantine, request the head of a local government to submit materials on inspection, medication, or vaccination of livestock and livestock products performed by its livestock epidemic-prevention officers or inspectors under the Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act (「축산물위생관리법」) — "동물검역기관의 장은 수출검역과 관련하여 필요하다고 인정하면 지방자치단체의 장에게 그 소속 가축방역관 또는 「축산물위생관리법」에 따른 검사관이 가축 및 축산물에 대하여 검사, 투약, 예방접종한 것 등에 관한 자료 제출을 요청할 수 있다."
