Cross-tabulation of EFSA FEEDAP dossier-level metadata (1331 dossiers) against the chemical composition × origin classification of the associated substance (via DOSSIER_DOCS type=SUBSTANCE join). The 1331 FEEDAP dossiers all link to a single substance each (1-to-1 strict join).

Pet food-relevant chemistry subset
FEEDAP dossiers where the associated substance is in pet-food- relevant chemistry categories:
| Category | Subset | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrocolloids / gelling agents (polymer + organic) | polymer × organic | 11 |
| Hydrocolloids (polymer, origin undefined) | polymer × (no origin) | 3 |
| Mineral salts / inorganic preservatives | mono-constituent × inorganic | 62 |
| Organic acids / palatants | mono-constituent × organic | 882 |
| Flavour mixtures | multi-constituent × organic | 38 |
| Probiotics / direct-fed microbials | microorganism × (no origin) | 98 |
Total pet-food-relevant FEEDAP dossiers: ~1194 (89.7%) — nearly all FEEDAP dossiers touch at least one pet-food-relevant chemistry category. This reflects how broadly Reg 1831/2003 feed additives apply to all animal species, including pets.
11 polymer × organic dossiers (deep dive target)
Of the 14 polymer dossiers in FEEDAP, 11 are organic polymers — the chemistry class that includes the 3 explicit "for pets" additive dossiers identified earlier:
- carrageenan (2022-03-23, doi:10.2903/j.efsa.2022.7285)
- agar (2022-03-23, doi:10.2903/j.efsa.2022.7284)
- sodium/potassium alginate (2017-07-05, doi:10.2903/j.efsa.2017.4945)
The remaining 8 dossiers in this subset include other hydrocolloid polymers (xanthan gum, pectin, carboxymethyl cellulose) and synthetic polymers used as feed additive carriers.
Microorganism subset (101 dossiers)
101 FEEDAP dossiers cover microorganisms or their toxins — the largest non-organic chemistry class in FEEDAP. This category includes:
- Probiotics (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus
strains) used as zootechnical additives (gut flora stabilizers)
- Silage inoculants (Lactobacillus plantarum, etc.) used as
technological additives
- Yeast derivatives (Saccharomyces cerevisiae products) used
as nutritional/sensory additives
These dossiers are often multi-strain formulations with broad species applicability including pets.
Data quality observations
- 21.2% of FEEDAP substances have no Origin recorded (282) —
gap in IUCLID population for organic chemicals of natural origin (botanical extracts, fermentation products).
- **Multi-constituent × (no origin) is the second-largest cell
(168)** — these are likely complex mixtures (essential oils, plant extracts, fermentation products) where Origin is hard to assign to a single chemical class.
- Polymer × organic at 11 dossiers is a tight subset —
almost certainly the "gelling agents and hydrocolloids" sub- category used heavily in wet pet food formulation.
Pet food relevance summary
The 11 organic polymer dossiers, 98 microorganism dossiers, 62 inorganic mineral dossiers, and 38 multi-constituent organic dossiers are the FEEDAP subsets most directly applicable to pet food formulation under EU Reg 1831/2003. The remaining ~1120 dossiers (mostly mono-constituent organic) cover generic feed additives (vitamins, amino acids, preservatives, antioxidants) that apply to pet food at the same usage rates as livestock feed.
