The recommended nutrient levels were set after comparative review of nutrition standards from:
- U.S. National Research Council (NRC, 미국연구위원회)
- Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO, 미국사료관리협회) — established 1992
- European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF, 유럽펫푸드산업연합) — established 2008
The NIAS standards incorporate research conducted from 2021 to 2024 by the National Institute of Animal Science (국립축산과학원), aligned with internationally accepted criteria.
Legal Linkage / 법적 연계
Reflected in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA, 농림축산식품부) Notification "Standards and Specifications for Feed, etc." (사료 등의 기준 및 규격) Appendix 15-2 [별표 15의2], newly established (revised and promulgated 2025-09). The label "complete pet food" (반려동물완전사료) must conform to the nutrient standards set by the NIAS Director. After a 3-year grace period, full enforcement begins in 2028.

- Dog (성견 / adult): 38 nutrients
- Dog (성장/번식기 / growth + reproduction): 40 nutrients
- Cat (성묘 / adult): 41 nutrients
- Cat (성장/번식기 / growth + reproduction): 43 nutrients
Recommended nutrient content is shown in two units: "per 100 g on dry-matter basis" (단위/건물 100g) and "per 1,000 kcal metabolizable energy" (단위/1,000kcal 대사에너지) — Tables 2-17a through 2-17h.
