Ingredient names (原材料名) under the Pet Food Safety Act, per MAFF's June 2026 check sheet:
All ingredients used, including additives, must in principle be listed in Japanese (原則、使用した全ての原材料（添加物を含む）を日本語で記載); processing aids (加工助剤) may be omitted (表示を省略することができます, see MAFF Q&A).
Table 1 category names (第1表): an ingredient shown only by category name must use a Table 1 name (e.g. 穀類, 肉類, 魚介類, 油脂類, 野菜類, 乳類). Relaxations: fish-only ingredients → 「魚類」; 肉類 → 「畜肉類」; poultry-only → 「家きん類」又は「家禽類」.
Table 2 use names (第2表 用途名, e.g. 甘味料, 着色料, 保存料, 増粘安定剤, 酸化防止剤, 発色剤): additives with a listed use must show both the additive name and the use name (添加物名と用途名の両方), e.g. 酸化防止剤（ミックストコフェロール）. Colorants whose substance name contains 「色」 may omit the use name; multiple polysaccharides → 「増粘多糖類」 without substance names.
Table 3 collective names (第3表 一括名): イーストフード, 香料, かんすい, 酸味料, 酵素, 調味料, 光沢剤, 豆腐用凝固剤, 苦味料, 乳化剤, ｐＨ調整剤, 膨張剤.
「ビタミン類」「ミネラル類」「アミノ酸類」 alone: only for cans of 100 g or less, or labelable area of 120 cm² or less (内容量が100g以下の缶詰又は表示可能面積が120cm2以下).
Listing order is not regulated by the Act (原材料名の記載順序は特に規定していません), but descending order (多い順に記載) is desirable for consumer information.
