Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 lays down the EU rules for the protection of animals during transport. Its scope applies to the transport of live vertebrate animals, so it covers companion animals (dogs and cats) as well as livestock, although several detailed provisions (e.g. journey logs, certificates of competence) are addressed to specific livestock species and to professional transporters.
