Under the Texas Commercial Feed Rules (4 TAC Chapter 61, implementing the Texas Commercial Feed Control Act / Agriculture Code Ch. 141), commercial feed — which includes pet food per §61.002(15) — "shall be labeled with the information prescribed in the Texas Commercial Feed Control Act (Act) and this chapter on the principal display panel of the product" (§61.22).
Required label elements include:
(1) A purpose statement — "A statement of purpose shall contain the specific species and animal class(es) for which the feed is intended. The purpose statement may be excluded from the label if the product name includes a description of the species and animal class(es) for which the product is intended" (§61.22(1)(A)).
(2) A guaranteed analysis where applicable — "Commercial feeds containing calcium, phosphorus and/or salt shall include a guaranteed analysis of the following minerals in the following order: (I) minimum and maximum percentage of calcium (Ca); (II) minimum percentage of phosphorus (P); (III) minimum and maximum percentages of salt (NaCl), when required" (§61.22).
(3) A quantity statement — "Net weight and/or net liquid volume must be expressed" (§61.22(8)(A)). An ingredient statement is also required for mixed feeds under §61.22.
