Diet characteristics (FDA analysis, 1/1/2014–4/30/2019)

Peas and/or Lentils (incl. chickpeas, beans)93%
Peas89%
Lentils62%
Potatoes / Sweet Potatoes42%

Animal proteins in reported diets: chicken, lamb, fish most common; atypical sources included kangaroo, bison, duck. No single animal protein source was predominant.

Vet-LIRN case investigation groups (KSU Forum 2020)

GroupPeriodCountRecovery
Group One2018-01 → 2019-04121 dogs107 fully or partial recovery
Group Two2019-11 → 2020-07(subset)5 full recovery + 30 partial recovery
Total reported to FDAthrough 2020-09>1,100
Vet-LIRN investigatedthrough 2020-09>150

Recovery pattern: Cardiac function (LV systolic function, LVIDd normalization) improved after discontinuing reported diets + medical treatment. 96% of recovery diets in Group One were grain-containing (only 3 were hydrolyzed protein: 2 corn starch, 1 brewer's rice).

Doberman Pinscher case example (Vet-LIRN)

Two 4-year-old Doberman Pinscher littermates (1 castrated male, 1 spayed female) on grain-free poultry+egg diet for ~2 years:

  • Male: presented first with dyspnea, weight loss, cough →

congestive heart failure → furosemide + pimobendan → DCM confirmed by echocardiogram → enalapril + spironolactone

  • Female: concurrent presentation, slight hyporexia →

occult DCM → treated with same regimen

  • Both improved after diet change to grain-inclusive

End of routine updates (~2022)

FDA ended routine public updates on the investigation (per AVMA news, 2022). The official page remained accessible through 2022 with a Nov 1 2022 case count, but was later retired from public domain (404 as of 2026-07-20).

Access methodology note

Direct curl from Tokyo VPS (206.237.120.227) to fda.gov is blocked by Akamai Bot Manager (302 → abuse-detection-apology.html, even with full Chrome 126 user-agent + cookie jar). Wayback Machine CDX has zero cardiomyopathy snapshots (FDA robots.txt blocks crawlers). Tavily extract works because it routes through a different IP class than direct VPS access.
