Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/354 of 4 March 2020 (OJ L 67, 5.3.2020, p. 1) is "establishing a list of intended uses of feed intended for particular nutritional purposes and repealing Directive 2008/38/EC". "PARNUT" is industry shorthand for these diets for Particular Nutritional Purposes (Regulation (EC) No 767/2009 framework).
Structure: the Annex has Part A (general provisions) and Part B (list of intended uses). Each Part B entry specifies six columns: particular nutritional purpose, essential nutritional characteristics, species or category of animal, labelling declarations, recommended length of time for use, and other provisions. Feed may be marketed only if the intended use is included in Part B and the entry's provisions are complied with (Article 1).
Part B contains exactly 44 entries: entries 10-30 (companion animals, mainly dogs and cats) and entries 50-72 (other species โ ruminants, pigs, poultry, equidae). Number ranges 1-9 and 31-49 are reserved and unused in all published versions.
Companion-animal purposes (entries 10-30): 10 support of renal function in chronic renal insufficiency; 11 reduction of oxalate stones formation; 12 regulation of glucose supply (diabetes mellitus); 13 reduction of ingredient and nutrient intolerances; 14 reduction of cystine stones formation; 15 nutritional restoration, convalescence; 16 reduction of urate stones formation; 17 dissolution of struvite stones; 18 reduction of struvite stone recurrence; 19 compensation for maldigestion; 20 reduction of intestinal absorptive disorders; 21 reduction of acute intestinal absorptive disorders; 22 support of lipid metabolism in hyperlipidaemia; 23 support of liver function in chronic liver insufficiency; 24 support of heart function in chronic cardiac insufficiency; 25 reduction of excessive body weight; 26 support of skin function in dermatosis and excessive hair loss; 27 support of the metabolism of joints in osteoarthritis; 28 reduction of copper in the liver; 29 reduction of iodine levels in feed in hyperthyroidism; 30 support in stressful situations.
