ECFR 582 antioxidants

Antioxidants used in pet food appear in FDA's animal-feed GRAS list (21 CFR 582) and the feed-additive list (21 CFR 573): butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA, 21 CFR 582.3169), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT, 21 CFR 582.3173), tocopherols (21 CFR 582.3890 and 582.5890; a-tocopherol acetate 582.5892), and ethoxyquin (21 CFR 573.380, "Ethoxyquin in animal feeds", with 573.400 covering ethoxyquin in certain dehydrated forage crops). Products preserved with mixed tocopherols are commonly labeled "preserved with mixed tocopherols", while synthetic antioxidants must be declared by their chemical names; when an antioxidant is used in an AAFCO-defined fat ingredient (33.1), its common name must be indicated followed by the words "used as a preservative". Ethoxyquin remains permitted in US animal feeds under 573.380 while the EU has withdrawn its authorization, so preservative systems differ between the two markets; mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) are the most universally accepted natural antioxidant across major regulatory frameworks.
