Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), via its Secretaria de Defesa Agropecuária, established maximum mycotoxin limits specifically for the pet-food category ("alimento para cães e gatos"). Portaria SDA/MAPA nº 1.412, of 3 October 2025 "Estabelece os limites máximos de micotoxinas em produtos destinados à alimentação animal da categoria alimento para cães e gatos" (establishes the maximum mycotoxin limits in animal-feeding products of the pet-food category for dogs and cats).
Framework (verified C1 substrings of the MAPA Portaria)
- Art. 1º: "Ficam estabelecidos os limites máximos de micotoxinas em produtos destinados à alimentação animal da categoria alimento para cães e gatos."
- Definitions (Art. 2º): "micotoxinas: metabólitos secundários produzidos por fungos filamentosos"; "limite: valor máximo permitido do contaminante em produtos destinados à alimentação animal".
- Art. 5º sets the limits: "aflatoxina B1: limite máximo de dez microgramas por quilograma" (maximum 10 µg/kg) and "aflatoxina total: limite máximo de vinte microgramas por quilograma" (maximum 20 µg/kg total aflatoxins, i.e. the sum of B1, B2, G1, G2).
- Art. 6º: products of the pet-food category that exceed these limits "são considerados impróprios para uso ou consumo animal" (are deemed unfit for animal use or consumption).
- Art. 7º: "Esta Portaria entra em vigor em 1º de julho de 2026" (enters into force 1 July 2026).
Why this matters
This is a first-hand MAPA primary regulation on pet-food contaminant limits, obtained via Tavily extract of the MAPA DIPOA base-legal PDF (Tavily's egress reached the official agricultura.gov.br host that the Tokyo relay/WAF had previously blocked). It supersedes the earlier pet-food mycotoxin framework (the prior unreachable IN MAPA nº 57/2023) with concrete numeric aflatoxin limits (B1 ≤ 10 µg/kg; total ≤ 20 µg/kg) effective 1 July 2026. Brazil's pet-food regulatory subject therefore moves from honest-pending to first-hand-covered for this contaminant limit.
