Data Sources

Our Synthesis Approach

Pet Data Station does not republish source documents. We synthesize — extracting the key values, definitions, and regulatory rules from public documents and presenting them as queryable, citation-rich RAG topics. Each topic's meta.json contains a sources array pointing to the original document.

Where source documents are in non-English (Korean 사료관리법, Japanese ペット食品安全法, Chinese GB/T standards), we provide English translations for international accessibility. The original-language source remains authoritative.

Primary Sources by Region

Pet Health & Safety Data (added 2026-07)

• openFDA Animal & Veterinary Adverse Events — 674 topics: active-ingredient report summaries (totals, species breakdown, top VEDDRA reactions) + 3 species×active leaderboards. Source: openfda.gov animal event API.
• Evidence Layer — Europe PMC / PubMed — 190 topics: species × condition diet-evidence clusters (dog/cat/horse/exotics). Open-Access abstracts are quoted verbatim with PMIDs; non-OA abstracts are pending license review (to be paraphrased or removed).
• Ingredient Composition — Feedipedia (INRAE/FAO) + CVB Feed Table 2023.2 — 49 topics: Weende proximate analysis + mineral means.
• Clinical & Vaccine Guidelines — WSAVA nutrition guidelines, AAHA canine 2022 + AAHA/AAFP feline 2020 vaccine guidelines, WHO rabies position.
• Pet Toxicology — PMC2984110 review thresholds: grape/raisin, onion/garlic, chocolate, xylitol, lily, caffeine.
• Pet Travel & Entry — EU Commission + UK gov.uk (non-EU→EU, into-GB requirements).
• US State & Local Pet Law — exotic-pet legality statutes (CA/MA/HI/NY/FL/WA/OR/CO), banned-breed directories (UK DDA, CN cities, SG, AU states), local ordinances (NYC/Seattle/Tacoma/Denver/Chicago/Pompano Beach), mandatory vaccination (NY PBH §2141, CA HSC §121690).
• Vet Drug Shortage & Approvals — EU CVMP shortage reports, Health Canada Drug Product Database labels, multi-country approval corpus.
• Breed Standards — AKC / CFA / FCI / TICA — 312 topics: official breed-standard documents (structure, coat, color, temperament, size) synthesized per breed, dog and cat, from registry publications.
• Market Statistics — 15 topics: pet-market size, pet population and channel structure for 9 countries (CA/KR/JP/UK/FR/IT/ES/BR/DE) from government and official trade sources (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, ZZF/IVH, PDSA PAW, USDA GAIN).
• Cross-Standard Nutrient Matrices — 15 topics: amino-acid / fatty-acid / vitamin / trace-mineral requirements across AAFCO 2026 × FEDIAF 2025 × NIAS 2024 on a unified dry-matter basis.
• Inherited Disorders — OMIA (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Animals, University of Sydney) — 2222 topics live: our primary source for companion-animal inherited disorders and breed-/species-specific disease records across dog, cat, horse, rabbit, hamster and ferret: mode of inheritance, clinical features, prevalence, causal genes/variants, and control/screening guidance. We use the OMIA data dump (omia.xml) under its openly-available terms, with written permission confirmed by the OMIA curator (University of Sydney, 2026-08). OMIA is a FAIR database; use is permitted with appropriate attribution. Each record links back to its source OMIA entry — see Attribution & Acknowledgements below.

Original Compilations

Beyond per-source topics, Pet Data Station publishes 641 original derived data compilations — cross-standard comparison structures built from the verified topic database (method: derived_from_dataset): ingredient crosswalks across AAFCO/EU/China (156), FDA adverse-event compilations (163), evidence ↔ ADE cross-references (78 + 53 CN), additive crosswalks (53), life-stage nutrient matrices (12), recall & enforcement taxonomies, contaminant/toxin limit matrices, import market-access and label-compliance matrices, insect-protein approval status, exotic-pet legality crosswalks, and the EU additive functional-group taxonomy.

Known Gaps

We are transparent about what we do not have:

• EU Reg 2020/354 entries 31-49 — These entries are absent from the regulation itself (the 2008/38/EC predecessor did not include them, and 2020/354 retained the gap). This is a legal gap in the source document, not a data omission. Total PARNUT entries = 44 (10-30 + 50-72).
• FEDIAF life-stage depth — Adult maintenance is fully covered (dog + cat, both official energy-density tables: 110/95 kcal dog, 100/75 kcal cat). Growth & reproduction tables are available in the cross-standard nutrient index; narrative topic synthesis for these life stages is ongoing.
• Real-time updates — Sources are updated periodically (most recently 2026-07-20). New regulations or amendments may have a 30-90 day ingestion lag. A monthly fingerprint monitor watches the primary source pages for changes.

Update Cadence

We aim to refresh each source at least annually. Recent update log:

• 2026-08-22 — OMIA inherited-disorder module goes live in waves after written permission from the OMIA curator: wave 1 (ophthalmic / retinal, 208 topics) published; every record carries entry-level OMIA source links, dataset DOI citation, and AHIDA acknowledgement
• 2026-07-20 — Static topic pages launched (site/topics/t/); API: cross_compare accepts bare standard codes, FEDIAF values served at official energy-density tables with per-response table field
• 2026-07-19 — Coverage expansion (USDA GAIN reports BR/MX/TH/PH/VN/IN, FDA SCOGS re-pull, WSDA WAC 16-252, USDA FDC pet food ingredient dataset, Korea NIAS 2024, Japan MAFF contaminant limits) + full source-text trust audit of all legacy topics
• 2026-07-18 — Data expansion W1 batches (cn/eu/us/kr), ingredient_lookup sources (AAFCO Ch6 650 + EU Feed Catalogue 604)
• 2026-07-16 — AAFCO 2024 Model Regulations + PFI PFLM FAQ ingested (latest US update)
• 2026-07-15 — FEDIAF 2025 + EU 2020/354 entries 50-72 + Canada CFIA Feeds Reg 2024 added
