Pet Bird Care: What Every Owner Should Know

Companion birds reward good husbandry with long, active lives, but they are unusually sensitive to both diet and household hazards. The guidance below covers the species most often kept as pets โ€” parrots, cockatiels, budgerigars, and related psittacines.

Nutrition

The old habit of feeding mostly seeds is the root of a lot of avian illness. Seed mixes are high in fat and deficient in calcium, vitamin A, and other nutrients, and birds given a choice will selectively eat the fatty seeds and leave the rest. Formulated (pelleted) diets largely solved this by removing the choice. As a practical target, larger parrots do well on about 80% pellets with 10โ€“15% healthy vegetables and 5โ€“10% fresh fruit; for small birds such as budgerigars, cockatiels, and lovebirds, 40โ€“50% pellets with 30โ€“40% seed mix plus the same vegetable and fruit proportions is recommended. A tell-tale sign of vitamin A deficiency is a stunted choanal papilla in the mouth.

Common Diseases

Obesity driven by seed-heavy diets leads to fatty liver disease (hepatic lipidosis), atherosclerosis, and heart strain; severely obese birds even deposit fat over the neck and thighs. Because captive birds are often sedentary, this is one of the most common problems seen in practice.

Psittacosis (chlamydiosis), caused by Chlamydia psittaci, is especially common in cockatiels, budgerigars, and small parrots โ€” and it is zoonotic, so a sick bird is a human health consideration too. Any unwell bird should have bacterial disease on the differential list; Pasteurella (often after a cat or rat attack), Salmonella, and Mycobacterium are among the usual suspects. Aspergillosis is an opportunistic fungal infection of immunocompromised birds, while candidiasis (Candida albicans) tends to strike the gastrointestinal tract of young or weakened individuals.

Household Hazards

Birds have extraordinarily sensitive respiratory systems, and several everyday items are acutely dangerous:

  • PTFE / Teflon fumes โ€” when non-stick cookware or certain heat bulbs are heated above 280ยฐC they release fluorinated gases that are rapidly fatal to inhaled air in birds.
  • Avocado โ€” persin, present in the fruit, skin, pit, and leaves, is toxic to psittacines.
  • Chocolate, coffee, caffeine (methylxanthines) โ€” cause restlessness, racing heart, tremors, and seizures.
  • Alcohol โ€” depresses the central nervous system and damages cells.
  • Heavy metals โ€” lead and zinc are the heavy-metal poisonings most often encountered; old paint, solder, and some cage hardware are the usual sources.
  • Mycotoxins โ€” aflatoxins and ochratoxin A from moldy feed cause oxidative damage and organ injury.
  • Rodenticides โ€” birds are poisoned directly or by eating prey that has ingested warfarin or brodifacoum.
  • Tea tree (Melaleuca) oil โ€” reported in a pet cockatiel case; avoid aromatic oils around birds.
  • Vitamin overdose โ€” both excessive vitamin A and excessive vitamin D disrupt health and calcium balance; more is not better.

Keeping birds away from non-stick fumes, unsupervised human food, and unsound cage materials prevents the large majority of these emergencies.
