China's GB/T 31216 and 31217 pet-food nutrient standards
China's national standards for complete pet food are GB/T 31216-2014 (complete dog food) and GB/T 31217-2014 (complete cat food). Values below are on a dry-matter basis (% DM) as labelled in the source (the English translation distributed via USDA GAIN report CH2022-0063, public domain). Every figure is verbatim.
Dog — GB/T 31216-2014 (% DM)
| Nutrient | Juvenile (growth / gestation / lactation) | Adult |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Crude protein (min) | ≥22.0 | ≥18.0 |
| Crude fat (min) | ≥8.0 | ≥5.0 |
| Crude ash (max) | ≤10.0 | ≤10.0 |
| Crude fiber (max) | ≤9.0 | ≤9.0 |
| Calcium (min) | ≥1.0 | ≥0.6 |
| Total phosphorus (min) | ≥0.8 | ≥0.5 |
| Water-soluble chloride as Cl⁻ (min) | ≥0.45 | ≥0.09 |
| Lysine (min) | ≥0.77 | ≥0.63 |
Cat — GB/T 31217-2014 (% DM)
| Nutrient | Juvenile | Adult |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Crude protein (min) | ≥28.0 | ≥25.0 |
| Crude fat (min) | ≥9.0 | ≥9.0 |
| Crude ash (max) | ≤10.0 | ≤10.0 |
| Crude fiber (max) | ≤9.0 | ≤9.0 |
| Calcium (min) | ≥1.0 | ≥0.6 |
| Total phosphorus (min) | ≥0.8 | ≥0.5 |
| Water-soluble chloride as Cl⁻ (min) | ≥0.3 | ≥0.3 |
| Taurine (min) | ≥0.1 (dry) / ≥0.2 (wet) | ≥0.1 (dry) / ≥0.2 (wet) |
How China lines up
On a DM basis, GB/T 31216 adult dog (protein ≥18.0, fat ≥5.0, Ca ≥0.6, P ≥0.5) matches AAFCO 2026 and NIAS 2024 adult dog floors. GB/T 31217 adult cat (protein ≥25.0, fat ≥9.0) matches NIAS's 25.0 / 9.0. China is one of the few standards here that explicitly splits cat taurine by moisture form (≥0.1 % dry / ≥0.2 % wet) directly in the nutrient table.
