# Ferret care — AEMV guide distilled

The domestic ferret (*Mustela putorius furo*) descends from the European polecat (male = hob, female = jill, baby = kit). They are playful, active and curious — but need a **ferret-proofed home** because they swallow objects and are at high risk for GI obstruction.

## Housing & environment

- Enclosure **at least 2 × 4 ft per ferret** (larger the better), multilevel for groups; use **solid flooring** (or fill wire with towels/fleece/newspaper).
- Keep at average room temperature and humidity; **avoid above 80°F (27°C) and humidity over 55%.** Provide constant fresh water and a litter box. **Avoid pine, cedar and corn cob** bedding.

## Diet & nutrition — strict carnivore

- Feed a commercial diet that lists **meat as the first three or more ingredients** with the **lowest amount of grains** (corn, wheat, soy). **Avoid grain-free diets**, which are potentially linked to bladder stones.
- Treats should be meat-based; avoid sugar, fruit or grains. Also prevent access to: dairy, bones, chocolate, foam/rubber/plastic toys that can be ingested, electrical cords, and human/other-pet chemicals and medications.

## Behavior & veterinary care

Ferrets are social and litter-box trainable (some learn harness and leash). Avoid unsupervised freedom and interaction with young children or dangerous pets; **ferret-ownership laws vary by state.** Take the ferret to an exotic-animal veterinarian for an **annual exam, vaccinations (canine distemper, rabies)** and any needed treatment; consider heartworm prevention. **Ferrets over 3 years should be examined every six months.**

## Common disorders

AEMV lists Canine Distemper virus; cancer (Adrenocortical disease/ACD, Insulinoma, Lymphoma, neoplasia); cardiac; dental; dermatologic (ear mites, fleas); gastrointestinal (foreign-body ingestion, especially in young ferrets); Heart worms; trauma; and urinary conditions.
