All bullets are exact substrings of the cited source file and C1-substring verified. Focus: toxicosis and environmental hazards of the pet species.\n## Toxicology facts\n- Like other rodents, chinchillas cannot vomit. Choking might be observed when the entrance to the trachea is occluded by a large piece of food or bedding or in postpartum females that eat their placentas. Aspiration of tiny particles from the foreign body can irritate the lower respiratory tract and precipitate a suffocating, edematous response leading to drooling, retching, coughing, and dyspnea as the chinchilla attempts to dislodge the foreign body. If untreated, choking can lead to asphyxiation and death.\n","sources":["exotic-pet-toxicology — Foreign-body choking / asphyxiation hazard in chinchillas (cannot vomit) (retrieved 2026-07-29)"],"source":{"authority":"exotic-pet-toxicology","title":"Foreign-body choking / asphyxiation hazard in chinchillas (cannot vomit)","url":"https://www.merckvetmanual.com/exotic-and-laboratory-animals/rodents/chinchillas","retrieved":"2026-07-29","ref":"","doc_type":"official PDF","source_document":"The Merck Veterinary Manual","verification_file":"pdf-raw/exotic-toxicology/chinchilla.txt"},"source_document":"The Merck Veterinary Manual","source_file":"pdf-raw/exotic-toxicology/chinchilla.txt","tokens_estimated":258,"generated_at":null,"tip":"Use /api/v1/topics to discover more topics. /api/v1/nutrient for precise single-point queries. /api/v1/cross_compare for 2-3 standard comparisons."}
