However, more data is needed on outcomes for \nprotocols using therapeutic multipurpose urinary foods formulated for both \nstruvite urolith dissolution and calcium oxalate urolith prevention.\nHYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To describe outcomes for medical dissolution of suspected \nstruvite uroliths in dogs using a therapeutic multipurpose urinary food and \nconcurrent or recent antimicrobial therapy.\nANIMALS: Thirteen client-owned dogs with suspected struvite uroliths.\nMETHODS: Single-institution, retrospective case series (observational) of dogs \nfed a therapeutic multipurpose urinary food for dissolution of suspected \nstruvite uroliths. Dogs had to be treated with antimicrobials concurrently or \nhave an absence of bacteriuria on urine microbial culture after recently \ncompleted antimicrobial therapy. Follow-up abdominal imaging was required. \nPatient and urolith characteristics, dissolution outcomes, and complications \nwere summarized.\nRESULTS: Complete urolith dissolution occurred in 9 (8 with cystoliths and 1 \nwith nephroliths) of 13 dogs included in the study. Mean time until \ndocumentation of complete dissolution was 71 ± 52 days. Eight of the dogs with \ncomplete dissolution had bacteriuria less than 60 days prior to urolith \ndiagnosis. Mean duration of antimicrobial therapy for dogs with successful \ndissolution was 66 ± 49 days. All dogs without complete dissolution had uroliths \nwith non-struvite shells (composed of 80%-100% calcium). No dog developed a \nurethral obstruction during the dissolution trial.\nCONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Struvite uroliths can be effectively \ndissolved in dogs with a therapeutic multipurpose urinary food and antimicrobial \ntherapy. Radiographs were evaluated for \nurolith size, shape, surface, borders, internal architecture, and quantitative \nradiopacity, and also assessed using a ratio of urolith-to-L5 vertebra pixel \nvalues (UOR). The diagnostic performance of urolith size and UOR was assessed \nwith receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves, calculating the area under \nthe ROC curve (AUC).\nRESULTS: Calcium oxalate uroliths were often highly radiopaque, associated with \nconcurrent nephroliths, had unique shapes such as bosselated or spiculated, and \nless commonly ovoid. Struvite uroliths were larger (median: 15 mm; IQR: \n8.1-25.8 mm) with a cut-off of ≥ 11 mm (AUC = 0.82, p < 0.001; specificity: 91%, \nsensitivity: 67%) and were associated with pyramidal shapes or solitary \ncystoliths. Cystine uroliths had lower radiopacity (median UOR: 0.71; IQR: \n0.63-0.80), with a cut-off of UOR ≤ 0.83 (AUC = 0.81, p < 0.001; specificity: \n67%, sensitivity: 84%).\nCONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: In vivo radiographic characteristics such \nas size, shape, and radiopacity can help differentiate LUT mineral compositions, \nenabling non-invasive diagnosis and guiding treatment.\n\n© 2025 The Author(s). Thirty-three of 63 cases provided additional information \nby completing our survey. In 25 of 33 (76%) cases, a source of tartaric acid was \nidentified in diets, supplements, or medications. In 24 of these 25 cases (96%), \nthe source of tartaric acid was choline bitartrate.\nCONCLUSIONS: When investigating a cause for CTT uroliths in dogs, consider diets \nand supplements containing choline bitartrate as a potential source of urolith \ncomponents.\n\n© 2025 The Author(s). A review of medical records in dogs that \nunderwent medical dissolution of upper urinary tract uroliths utilizing diet, \nadministration of antibiotics, and double-pigtail ureteral stent(s) placement, \nwhen indicated, was performed. Medical management was generally continued for \n4 weeks beyond urolith dissolution. Information on biochemical, microbiological, \nimaging, and clinical outcomes before and after dissolution were recorded.\nRESULTS: Six dogs (9 kidneys) were included with bilateral (3) or unilateral (3) \nnephrolithiasis, ureterolithiasis, or a combination. A ureteral stent(s) was \nplaced endoscopically in 5/6 dogs (6/9 kidneys) for obstructive ureterolithiasis \n(n = 5) or a nonobstructive massive nephrolith (n = 1). All dogs had a positive \nurine culture of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius with a median urine pH of 7.25 \n(range, 6.5-8) and 4/5 had pyonephrosis. All dogs had initial evidence of \nurolith dissolution at a median of 1.1 months (range, 0.42-5.9), with complete \ndissolution of ureteroliths at a median of 3.9 months (range, 1.5-7.6), \nnephroliths at 5.3 months (range, 1.5-7.6), and lower urinary tract uroliths at \n0.87 months (range, 0.42-5.9). Stents were removed in 3/6 once dissolution was \ndocumented. The median follow-up time was 519 days (range, 177-2492 days).\nCONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Medical dissolution and decompression of \nupper urinary tract struvite uroliths should be considered a minimally invasive \ntreatment for dogs before more invasive options.\n\n© 2024 The Author(s). Due to overlapping \nsymptoms, proper differentiation is crucial.\nAIM: This study aimed to assess the clinical, hematological, biochemical, \nmicrobiological, and ultrasonographic parameters of urolithiasis and cystitis in \nIraqi police dogs.\nMETHODS: A total of 45 K9 dogs aged 3-10 years, including 10 healthy controls, 5 \nwith urolithiasis, and 11 with cystitis (acute/chronic), were assessed at \nAl-Najaf's K9 unit, Iraq. Hematological, biochemical, urinalysis, \nmicrobiological testing, and abdominal ultrasonography were performed for \nclinical evaluation. Statistical analysis included analysis of variance and LSD \ntest (p < 0.05).\nRESULTS: Dogs with urolithiasis exhibited abdominal pain, dysuria, hematuria, \nand urinary retention. Hematologically, they showed reduced RBC counts and \nhemoglobin levels alongside increased WBCs, neutrophils, and platelets. \nBiochemical analysis revealed elevated levels of total protein. Urinalysis \nrevealed proteinuria, hematuria, and calcium oxalate/struvite calculi. \nUltrasound confirmed hyperechoic bladder stones with acoustic shadowing. \nPatients with cystitis presented with dysuria, pollakiuria, stranguria, and \nperiuria. Abdominal palpation revealed distended bladders, especially in the \nfemale patients. A significant increase in body temperature (p < 0.05) was \nnoted. Hematological findings included elevated TLC, neutrophils, monocytes, \nband neutrophils, platelets, and ESR. Biochemical analysis showed increased \nurea, creatinine, and total protein levels. Urinalysis revealed acidic urine pH \n(6.2 ± 0.05). Microbiological culture (n = 26) isolated Escherichia coli \n(57.69%), Staphylococcus spp. (34.61%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (15.38%), and \nother less common pathogens. Ultrasonography revealed bladder wall thickening, \ncorrugation, and hyperechoic luminal content.\nCONCLUSION: Multimodal diagnostic protocols enable precise differentiation \nbetween dogs with urinary tract diseases. The present study objective was to report the confirmation rate of \nsuspected cases of urolithiasis in dogs and cats treated at veterinary clinics \nin the city of Santarém, Pará. A retrospective cohort study was carried out from \nthe database of medical records from six veterinary clinics from the years 2012 \nto 2023. Dogs and cats were evaluated for clinical suspicion, species, age, \nbreed, feeding type, diagnosis, location of the urolith and type of urolith. As \nthe data did not present a normal distribution, they were submitted to the \nChi-square test and Fisher's exact test. The analyses were performed using \nStatistical Analysis Software (SAS), considering a 5% significance level. Of the \n532 files analyzed of suspected cases, 353 were confirmed. The percentage of \ncases in cats (72.23%) was higher than in dogs (55.37%). The age range between 2 \nand 5 years was the period when it had more confirmed cases and most of the \nuroliths were found in the urinary vesicle, both in dogs and cats. It was \nconcluded that there was a high index of confirmed cases of urolithiasis in dogs \nand cats, being superior in this last species.
