The change was driven by expert-subcommittee concerns about large-breed puppy skeletal development from excess calcium: the 2014 Appendix A notes the subcommittee recommendation that maximum calcium for large breed growth formulations be lowered to 1.8% DM (vs 2.5% previously), and adds that no lowering was recommended for small/moderate size breeds or adult dogs. The split is formalized as a footnote on the dog food DM table: \"The maximum of 1.8% is applicable to products formulated to meet the Growth and Reproduction Nutrient Profile and products formulated for All Life Stages. The maximum of 2.5% is applicable only to products formulated to meet the Adult Maintenance Nutrient Profile.\" Phosphorus maximum remained 1.6% DM for both life stages, and all other nutrient values (protein, fat, amino acids, other minerals, vitamins) were identical between AAFCO 2013 and 2014.
